How far in advance can I make a reservation?

For Port Townsend/Coupeville and Anacortes/Sidney, BC:

Reservations for all sailings for the season are released two months before the schedule begins.

        For Anacortes/San Juan Islands:

        Reservations are released in thirds.

        • Two months before the start of the season, one-third of reservations for all sailings for the entire season are released.
        • Two weeks before the sailing date another one-third is released.
        • Two days before the sailing date the final one-third is released.

Space is always released at 7 a.m. Read our Tiered Release of Space handout (pdf 436 kb) for more information.

        Standby space is often available
If you need to travel at the last minute, or can't make a reservation for the day you'd like to travel, try traveling standby.

While you may not always get on the sailing of your choice, there is often space available when people don't show up for their reservations or when reservation holders end up traveling at a different time.

Just remember that priority for standby space on every sailing goes to emergency vehicles and customers with medical priority loading status.

What else do I need to know?

View of Orcas Island ferry terminal When to arrive

        Arrival windows vary by route:

        • Port Townsend–Coupeville: You are advised to arrive at the terminal 30-45 minutes before your reserved sailing.
        • International: You should arrive at the Anacortes or Friday Harbor terminals one hour before your reserved sailing. You should arrive at the Sidney, B.C. terminal 90 minutes before the sailing to ensure processing through Canadian and U.S. immigration.
        • Anacortes–San Juan Islands: Drivers are encouraged to arrive at the end of the line at least 45-60 minutes prior to their reserved sailing time. Vehicles must be ticketed and through the tollbooth at least 30 minutes prior to their reserved sailing for all westbound and eastbound departures. Vehicles that do not check in at the tollbooth at least 30 minutes ahead will lose their reserved space and travel standby. Please note that on busier sailings, vehicles may be required to queue up before the tollbooth. Drivers are responsible for ensuring they are checked in more than 30 minutes prior to their reservation.

        Traffic conditions at the terminal

We have traffic cameras at each location to help get rid of the guesswork. Visit our
Know Before You Go Somewhere page to find your terminal.

        How to redeem your reservation

Bring your confirmation number, printed reservation with bar code, or tell us your name when you go through the tollbooth.

        Tips for changing your plans

You can cancel your reservation without penalty any time until 5 p.m. the day before your reserved sailing. There is one free change after 5 p.m., but it has to be done before the lockout period, which is two hours for all routes.
