With identity theft and unemployment fraud investigated nationwide, the Department is holding claims that might potentially be fraudulent and canceling those that have been identified as most likely fraudulent. Work Search Waiver Extension Information
If you are on unemployment due to a COVID-19 lay-off, the work search waiver has been extended:
1.If you are temporarily laid off or on a leave of absence from your regular job due to COVID-19 but are expected to return to that job: The work search waiver under the Civil Emergency Declaration is currently in place through the week ending August 8th as long as you remain able and available to work for your employer. Please note, the work search waiver does not mean that you will be able to continue collecting benefits if you refuse a recall to work request made by your employer. Refusing a recall to your job will create an eligibility issue requiring a fact finding interview to gather facts from you and your employer about why you could not accept the recall. Those facts will be used to determine if you had good cause for refusing to return to your job and whether benefits can continue to be paid.
2.If you are permanently separated from your last job but now unemployed due to a COVID-19-related reason: The work search waiver currently in place will remain in effect through the week ending July 11th, based on the planned reopening of businesses in Maine. If you are still unemployed as of that date, you will be required to start looking for work the week beginning July 12th and report your work search activities each week for which you file a continued claim starting with your claim for the week ending July 18th. This work search is a condition for receiving unemployment benefits and failure to look for work after July 11th can result in the denial of benefits.
